Recommended books about depression
Being a person who has suffered with it, I have read many books about depression. There are three lists of books. The first list is of great books about depression. All of the books are rated very highly by readers. They are perfect for people who want self help with their own anxiety and depression battle. The second is a list of books I would recommend to people who need a better understanding of the relationship between various mental illnesses and esential fatty acids. The last list of books pertain specifically to panic attacks.
5 Star books about depression
- Self-Coaching: The Powerful Program to Beat Anxiety and Depression
A guy talks about is background and his personal battle with anxiety and depression. He tells you specifically what he did to get over it and return to normal life. Excellent book for people looking for self help.
- The Beast: A Journey Through Depression
This book is about one woman's personal struggle with depression. It is very honest about what depression is really like. If you are suffering from depression, you will love this book & find comfort knowing you are not alone in your struggle.
- Manic-Depressive Illness: Bipolar Disorders and Recurrent Depression, 2nd Edition
This book is said to be the most comprehensive compilation of information about manic depression. The material is a little dated - 1990. There are newer drugs than the ones talked about in here. The book is kind of like an encyclopedia for manic depression.
Books about Omega-3 and mental illness

- Written by doctors who are treating depression with ethyl epa. Ethyl EPA is a pure form of eicosapentaenoic acid, one of the main ingredients in fish oil. Dr. Puri's research points to EPA as being the primary fatty acid responsible for improving mental wellness. The book is full of detailed information specifically about EPA & DHA's affect on various mental illnesses. It explains much of the science.
- The Omega-3 Connection: The Groundbreaking Antidepression Diet and Brain Program
- Written by Andrew L. Stoll, M.D. Andrew Stoll is another doctor who's name you'll see in studies related to omega-3 oils being used to treat various mental illnesses. I enjoyed this book very much. He discusses the relationships between omega-3 and various mental illnesses like depression and bipolar disorder. He makes very convincing arguments.
- Omega-3 Oils: A practical guide.
. - By Dr. Rudin -- The information in this book is what initially inspired me to try taking fish oil to treat my anxiety and depression. I am eternally grateful for Dr. Rudin's information. This book is not as scientific as the others. It simply explains the results of a small study conducted on people with a wide variety of ailments not just mental illness. One of the side effects that these people reported was a better sense of well being. Its a very small, inexpensive book and a very fast read.
- The Anti-Inflammation Zone
- Written by Dr. Barry Sears. This book isn't really about mental illness. Rather, it makes the case for taking omega-3 supplements for general health. He does mention its efficacy for mental illness, but it is not the main focus of the book. This book explains the importance of the essential fatty acids in promoting an anti-inflamatory environment inside our bodies. It goes very deep into explaining eicasonoids. This book is highly recommended for people who are very health concious.
